When it comes to taking photos, there is nothing more fun than shooting waves from the water. This day was a rare north swell in late spring on an absolutely beautiful day. North swells usually only occur in winter and at this particular spot the sun rises right in the middle of the beach during that time of year. But during spring, as summer approaches, the sun rises from a little further north, creating optimal lighting when pointing south. The elements aligned for me on this day and I'm so grateful for the experience.
On March 8, 9, 10, and 11 I was blessed with the opportunity to film and photograph a historical canoe race that included 3 total days of racing, 90 miles of paddling, gail force winds, torrential rains, an amazing come from behind victory on day 2, giant windy seas on the final day and $50,000 in prize money. I think most participants will tell you you that it was the most challenging and enjoyable race they have ever attended. The following are a few of my favorite moments.

Love this spot! I grew up on this beach. My friends and I used to call this the whoa and wee cave. Small swells would suck us out as the water drained out of the cave. That was the whoa part. Then the wave would push us through. That was the wee part. Or maybe it was the other way around. I guess we must have been pretty small back then. This shot is available here.
I've been going to this spot a lot lately taking photos of the inside of waves and getting pounded into the sand. It typically takes a few days for me to get all the sand out of my ears after a session down here. This past Saturday, I showed up to some really fun waves at sunrise.
I've hiked this coastline many times and have always enjoyed the few steps it takes to cross this little black sand beach. It is so small that high tide wipes all footprints away everyday. A few nights ago, the elements aligned for a fun sunset shot.
My photography evolved from my experience shooting architectural photographs and is inspired by the beauty of the ocean and natural island landscapes.
