Olamau Race 2012 03/14/2012

On March 8, 9, 10, and 11 I was blessed with the opportunity to film and photograph a historical canoe race that included 3 total days of racing, 90 miles of paddling, gail force winds, torrential rains, an amazing come from behind victory on day 2, giant windy seas on the final day and $50,000 in prize money.  I think most participants will tell you you that it was the most challenging and enjoyable race they have ever attended.  The following are a few of my favorite moments.

Day 1

Picture
Team Livestrong battling through adverse conditions.
Picture
Team Primo and 404 Simple Mobile getting pounded by pouring rain.
Picture
Team Primo very close to the pounding surf and sharp rock. Every inch counts.

Day 2

Picture
404 simple mobile taking a very unusual line way inside through the pailolo channel and pulling of an amazing come from behind victory.

Final Day

Picture
While most teams paddled unlimited canoes with fancy hull designs weighing less than 200 pounds, the team from the pacific northwest paddled a traditional 400 pound canoe on every leg of the race.

We had only one Wahine crew enter this years race. Team Hanaiakamalama seemed to be having the most fun!!

Team Primo road some mountains on their way to victory!!

Team Primo walked away with a grand total of $26,000 including a $20,000 check for first place overall.

Love this spot!  I grew up on this beach.  My friends and I used to call this the whoa and wee cave.  Small swells would suck us out as the water drained out of the cave.  That was the whoa part.  Then the wave would push us through.  That was the wee part.  Or maybe it was the other way around.  I guess we must have been pretty small back then.  This shot is available here.

I've been going to this spot a lot lately taking photos of the inside of waves and getting pounded into the sand.  It typically takes a few days for me to get all the sand out of my ears after a session down here.  This past Saturday, I showed up to some really fun waves at sunrise.

Kaupulehu Sunset 11/29/2011

I've hiked this coastline many times and have always enjoyed the few steps it takes to cross this little black sand beach.  It is so small that high tide wipes all footprints away everyday.  A few nights ago, the elements aligned for a fun sunset shot.

Here are some video clips from the rock running day.

Rock Running 08/22/2011

Once a week, I've been going to this spot with friends and running rocks under water.  I love the experience, but every time I do it, I also wish I was taking photos.  So last week, I brought my water housing and shot the whole experience.  The following are a few of my favorite moments.
